Are you a Farmer?

‘It is only the farmer who faithfully plants seeds in the Spring, who reaps a harvest in the Autumn.’*

*B C Forbes

Farmer Andy‘Are you a Farmer?’ asked a young boy at the market on Saturday… Well, I’m not surprised when you took a look at the produce on our stall and Andy was looking pretty dapper in his new ‘Winter Hat’. We were delighted to have been invited to join in with the Skittle Alley Slow Food Market at the weekend as part of the first year anniversary celebrations and I’m so that glad we did. Lindsay and George opened the Skittle Alley a year ago,  check out their Instagram, primarily as a cafe for the community, selling good coffee, artisan bread and carefully chosen pantry goods. They have since expanded to running a small market on Saturday mornings, which has been endorsed by the Slow Food Movement, and draws together a few select stalls offering produce that complements each other. The cafe, and the market are only open for a few hours each morning but are well worth seeking out. Nestled on the bank of the Thames as Chiswick touches Hammersmith, we were greeted with a fresh coffee as we began to set up our stall. Initially I’d planned to take down just our honey and preserves and was looking forward to talking to people about our courses and schoolswork, though with the success of our recently opened Micro Bakery, I decided to get up early to bake some treats to take along. As we live so close to the market, it was a pleasure to take part, especially as other stall holders came from as far a field as Somerset. We took two of our beautiful chickens with us and this obviously provoked the farming questions. Customers were guessing that we’d travelled up from the west country and were surprised to hear about our urban smallholding in the next town. If you are local to West London, you may want to pop along to Sustainable Sunday on 18th October, organised by Ealing Transition, to brush up on your sustainable skills  – Sara will be leading a bread workshop – teaching her famous cinnamon swirls!
